Anthony Castro was born in Romblon, Philippines, spent most of his childhood in San Jose, California and currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. He received his MFA in Painting at The Claremont Graduate University in Los Angeles and BFA in Painting at San Jose State University. Prior to moving to New York City in 1994 Castro spent a year in Prague right after graduate school, turning his flat into a makeshift studio to "just draw" and ending up painting large graphic murals for dance clubs. Since then, Castro has continued his art making + DJing in the New York area. Castros paintings have been exhibited in venues including Da Gallery and Sloan Fine Art, New York, The Bronx River Arts Center, Stay Gold Gallery, Brooklyn, Space 301, New York, and Works Gallery, San Jose, CA. Castro's art is rooted in abstract painting, enthusiastically references an array of visual forms. He is interested in the apprehension and balance created by the juxtaposition of a "mechanically" produced and improvised, gestural image. Inspiration can be found in the everyday ephemera of the city surrouding, music, Atari video game graphics, letter forms, design, cinema, urban landscapes, nature and textbooks.
Castro had the opportunity to work for the Museum Of Modern Art , where he played an integral role in re-branding their visual direction, designing and executing some unforgettable window and shop product presentations. His savvy design sensibility mixed with his artistic practice proved a worthy contribution MoMA's ever expanding program.
His current role as Creative Director for Maharlika Filipino Moderno presented an amazing opportunity to design the interior of the restaurant and join the Maharlika family to re-brand and elevate Filipino Cuisine.
