Anthony Castro was born in Romblon, Philippines spent most of his childhood in San Jose, California and currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. He received his B.F.A. in Painting at San Jose State University and his M.F.A in Painting at The Claremont Graduate University, in Los Angeles. Prior to moving to New York City, Castro spent a year in Prague right after graduate school, turning his flat into a makeshift studio to "just draw". He ended up painting large graphic murals for dance clubs after meeting a few fellow expat club owners. Since then, Castro has continued his art making and also DJing in the New York area. Castros paintings have been exhibited in venues including Da Gallery and Sloan Fine Art, New York, The Bronx River Arts Center, Stay Gold Gallery, Brooklyn, Space 301, New York, and Works Gallery, San Jose, CA.
Castro had the opportunity to work for the Museum Of Modern Art , where he played an integral role in re-branding their visual direction, designing and executing some unforgettable window and shop product presentations. His savvy design sensibility mixed with his raw painting talent proved a worthy contribution MoMA's ever expanding program.
Castro's work, which is situated in the context of abstraction, enthusiastically references an array of visual forms. He is interested in the apprehension and balance created from the juxtaposition of a "mechanically" produced and improvised, gestural image. Inspiration can be found but not limited to built environment, music, Atari video game graphics, letter forms, graphic design, cinema, urban landscapes, nature and textbooks.
